Gym Days and Getaways: Getting the Most Out of Your Hair System When You're Active

It all begins with an idea.

Here at New Wave Barnsley, we know the confidence a hair unit provides isn't meant to keep you sitting still. Our clients are active—hitting the gym, playing sports, and jetting off on holiday.

The good news? A modern, high-quality hair system is designed to handle your lifestyle. The challenge? Sweat, sun, salt, and chlorine are the biggest enemies of your unit's bond and hair quality.

Here is your essential guide to keeping your unit secure, fresh, and vibrant, whether you’re smashing a personal best or lounging on a beach.

Part 1: Your Gym and Workout Unit Care Plan

Sweat is the main adversary in the gym, as it can slowly break down even the strongest adhesive bond. A little prep and a solid post-workout routine are all you need.

Pre-Workout Prep: Secure the Bond

  1. Wait for the Cure: After a fresh install or re-bond, wait the full 24–48 hours before engaging in any strenuous activity. The adhesive needs this time to fully cure and achieve maximum hold.

  2. Scalp Protection is Key: If you are a heavy or frequent sweater, use a scalp protector or anti-perspirant spray (like Walker Max Hold Sport) on your scalp before applying the adhesive. This creates a barrier against oil and moisture, extending the life of your bond.

  3. Use a Sweatband: A simple, moisture-wicking headband or sweatband placed just above your hairline is the most effective tool for soaking up forehead sweat before it runs down to the adhesive line.

Post-Workout Protocol: The Essential Rinse

The salt in your sweat is corrosive and can weaken the bond if left to dry.

  1. Immediate Rinse: As soon as your workout is done, hit the shower. Use cool or lukewarm water to gently rinse your unit to wash away sweat and salt residue.

  2. Pat, Don't Rub: Gently pat the hair dry with a soft towel. Avoid rubbing or aggressive scrubbing, especially near the base, as this can twist the hair and loosen the bond.

  3. Quick Re-Tack (Optional): If you feel the edges are slightly loose after a heavy session, you can use a small dab of liquid adhesive (like Mity-Tite) or a small strip of tape just on the edges to "tack" them back down securely until your next full re-bond.

Part 2: Hair System Care on Holiday and by the Water

Holidays mean sun, sea, and pools—the three greatest challenges to your unit's longevity and colour.

The Travel Kit: Pack Smart

Make sure your holiday maintenance kit is stocked:

  • Travel-Size System Products: Sulfate-free shampoo, light conditioner, and a leave-in conditioner/detangler.

  • UV Protection Spray: Essential for sunnier climates to prevent colour fading.

  • Adhesive Backup: A small tube of waterproof glue or pre-cut tape strips for emergency edge re-tacks.

  • Wide-Tooth Comb: To gently detangle the hair.

The Water Rule: Pool and Beach

You absolutely can swim, but you need to prepare the hair first.

  1. The Fresh Water Soak: Before getting into the pool (chlorine) or the ocean (saltwater), rinse your hair system thoroughly with fresh, clean water and apply a coat of leave-in conditioner. The hair acts like a sponge; if it's full of clean water, it will absorb less damaging chlorine or salt.

  2. Waterproof Adhesive: If you know you'll be swimming frequently, schedule your re-bond with us right before your trip and specifically request a maximum-strength, waterproof adhesive. This offers the best security against water immersion.

  3. The Post-Swim Wash: As soon as you are out of the water, rinse your unit again with fresh water to remove all traces of chemicals or salt. Follow up with a light, moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to replenish lost moisture.

Sun and Heat Protection

Prolonged sun exposure damages the unit's hair quality and causes colour fading (oxidation).

  1. Wear a Hat: When sunbathing or spending long hours outdoors, a stylish cap or wide-brimmed hat is your best defense against UV damage and colour fade.

  2. Apply UV Spray: Use a UV protective spray throughout the day, just as you would use sun cream on your skin.

  3. Air Dry When Possible: In warm climates, let the hair air dry after washing instead of constantly using a hot blow dryer. Give your unit a break from excessive heat styling.

By treating your hair system with a little extra care during high-activity periods, you ensure it remains secure, comfortable, and looking its absolute best for your workout or your well-deserved holiday. Enjoy the freedom the New Wave provides!
